India reclaim Border-Gavaskar trophy

Amit Mishra followed up a stunning run out with three wickets in India's 172-run triumph over Australia © AFP

That it happened in the same city where Australia famously conquered the final frontier four years ago was poignant. India regained the coveted Border-Gavaskar Trophy, their first series win over Australia in eight years, after they bowled Australia out for 209 to win by 172 runs. It was a dramatic day, with an energetic India following up three early wickets with dropped catches to allow Matthew Hayden score a pugnacious 77 and give Australia a whiff of victory. India's spinners held their nerve, however, and relentlessly plugged away with precision and hostility to snuff out the seven wickets required to regain the trophy squandered in 2004. India confidently stepped into a new era with their captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, winning his third Test in a row.

India began the day well. Simon Katich had played the horizontal shot a couple times, once connecting with a swing to the deep square-leg boundary, but trying to work a short ball across to the on side once too often, he skied Ishant Sharma into orbit. Dhoni didn't for a second take his eyes off the swirling ball - 29 for 1.

Zaheer Khan produced an edge from the first delivery bowled to Ponting, squared up on the back foot, but the ball didn't carry to Rahul Dravid at first slip. One classy on-drive later, Ponting was wastefully run out for 4. He dabbed and set off for an extremely ambitious single and Amit Mishra, screaming in from mid-off, threw down the stumps with a brilliant underarm pick-up and fling - 37 for 2.

Ishant couldn't believe Michael Clarke wasn't given lbw by the umpire Billy Bowden in the next over when the ball incriminatingly thudded into his left pad - replays showed it would have clipped leg stump - and Zaheer had to grit his teeth when the batsman twice edged wide of second slip in three balls. Hayden also chopped through the slips, looking to score off almost every delivery against the new ball. India missed a big opportunity when he was on 30. Harbhajan Singh came in after 12 overs and cursed under his breath when Dhoni dropped a regulation edge as Hayden tried to cut the second ball for four.

  • The last time Australia failed to win a Test in a series was against New Zealand in 2001-02, when all three Tests were drawn.
  • Australia lost by a difference of two Tests for the first time since their 3-1 defeat against West Indies in the Frank Worrell Trophy in 1988-89.
  • Sachin Tendulkar became the 27th player (apart from wicketkeepers) to take 100 catches in Tests.
  • Ishant Sharma, who took 15 wickets in the series, became the first Indian fast bowler to top the wickets tally for India in a Test series at home since Javagal Srinath's tally of 12 in the two-Test series against Zimbabwe in 2000-01.
  • Australia's aggressive intent today marked a turnaround from their performance on the third day, when they managed 166 runs. Their batsmen were constantly on the look out for runs leaving alone only 35 deliveries in over 48.5 overs, as opposed to 65 in a single session on the third day.
  • The Australians scored 27 runs off 20 balls with the sweep shot, and 27 off 25 with the cut.. With the leg glance, they scored 47 off 41.

The dismissal of Clarke for 22, nibbling at a lovely delivery as Ishant plugged away on an exemplary length, seemed to have nailed it decisively India's way at 82 for 3. Then Dravid, at slip, dropped Hayden on 36 when the batsman went for another powerful reverse-sweep. To add to the mess, needless overthrows and misfields in the circle allowed Australia easy runs as they set about chasing a big score.

It was evident that Hayden had victory on his mind. Swatting away almost everything the spinners tossed him, Hayden rediscovered the rhythm that had eluded him for much of this series. He continued to pick his spots with powerful sweeps - the shot with which he made his name in 2001 - and some deft reverse-sweeps. Harbhajan was swept for consecutive boundaries, both shots bisecting two men in the deep, and a six off Virender Sehwag over mid-on set the pulses racing. The run-rate had now gone well past five an over.

Then Mishra struck with a superb piece of wrist spin to dismiss Michael Hussey. Mishra fizzed up a topspinner on nearly a perfect length and extracted bounce, which drew an edge to Dravid at slip. This time he held it cleanly and Mishra erupted.

The worst came four deliveries later for Australia. Harbhajan floated down an airy, turning delivery and Hayden, having just smashed a four through midwicket, shuffled across and was struck beneath the knee roll, plumb in front. A flatfooted Brad Haddin then scooped Mishra to mid-off, feeding Sachin Tendulkar his 100th catch in Test cricket, and the end was nigh. Shane Watson nibbled a cut off Harbhajan into Dhoni's gloves for 9, Jason Krejza was stumped when two-thirds down the track to Mishra, and Brett Lee edged Harbhajan to short leg.

In a touching tribute to Sourav Ganguly, who signed off in this Test, Dhoni let him captain the side as the final rites were being administered. When the last wicket fell just before tea, Mitchell Johnson trapped lbw by a Harbhajan doosra, Ganguly and Dhoni embraced at the centre of India's raucous celebrations. Ganguly had played a key role in shaping cricket's most enthralling current rivalry back in 2001, and he can leave the game knowing that it has been passed on into worthy hands. Dhoni led his team off in style, while people made room for Ganguly to say his final goodbyes. There was no overly emotional reaction from Ganguly; bar one fling at Lord's, his touch had always been too nuanced for that.

For Indian fans this win may not be as emotional or emphatic as Rawalpindi in 2004 or Jamaica in in 2006 - where India broke elusive and painstaking barriers - but there's no denying the significance of this Indian autumn.

Tendulkar gets his 40th ton on day-1 of 4th test

Sachin Tendulkar brought up his 40th Test hundred to lead India's rally to 311 for 5 on the opening day © Getty Images

Almost everything Sachin Tendulkar did today - from opening his account with a brush off the pads for four, to punching gloves with VVS Laxman at lunch to strutting back after tea - pointed to a batsman full of intent. His efforts paid off, despite a run-out chance on 74 and drops on 85 and 98 off the persevering debutant Jason Krejza, as he scored his 40th Test hundred to lead India's recovery, after a pre-lunch flurry of wickets, to 311 for 5 on the opening day in Nagpur.

India lost debutant M Vijay, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag in 29 deliveries towards the end of the first session before the two in-form veterans shored up the innings. For nearly three and a half hours, Tendulkar and Laxman batted gracefully for 146 runs, their stand the highlight of India's day.

Tendulkar looked at ease since replacing Dravid - out for a duck - driving straight and impregnable in defence. He was the early aggressor in the partnership with Laxman, unfurling a slog-sweep over midwicket and a lofted on-drive in one Krejza over to raise India's 150. While the faster men were driven through cover, flicked to midwicket quite fluently or on-driven with laser-like precision, the spinners were tackled with excellent footwork.

Laxman, not at his most silky and sublime, collected his runs slowly and mechanically. As in Delhi, where he stroked 259 unbeaten runs, he stood firm, as has become his trademark. Even when the ball stopped on him, Laxman relied on those supple wrists and worked Krejza over the infield. The only phase when he was troubled was during Brett Lee's second spell, when the bowler obtained a bit of reverse-swing.

The scoring rate dipped with each session, from five - after Sehwag had blazed away - to four and under, but the objective rarely wavered. The pair scurried hard singles and dispatched anything loose - of which there was plenty - and almost always picking their mark whenever they went aerial.

  • Sachin Tendulkar's 109 was his 91st score of fifty or above, the highest for any batsman. He overtook Allan Border, who made 27 centuries and 63 fifties.
  • Tendulkar became the first batsman to reach 5000 runs in the first innings of Tests, and averages 72.65 for the same. His average in the fourth innings, however, is 33.60 in 55 matches.
  • Tendulkar's 40th Test century was also his tenth against Australia. Only Jack Hobbs, with 12 centuries in 41 Tests against Australia, has more.
  • VVS Laxman, during his innings of 64, went past 1000 runs in 2008. It's the most he's scored in a calendar year, the previous highest being 984 runs in 15 Tests in 2002.
  • Brett Lee averages 64.28 with the ball this series, which is his highest in the four Test series he has played against India. He averaged 59.50 in the series against India in 2003-04 in Australia.
  • Billy Bowden became the tenth umpire to stand in fifty Tests. Steve Bucknor heads the list with 124.
  • Jason Krezja, who took 3 for 138, is just 12 runs shy of becoming the spinner to concede the most runs in an innings on debut for Australia. Shane Warne's 1 for 150 against India in Sydney in 1992 is at the top of the list.
Bottom Curve

Tendulkar slowed down as tea approached, perhaps mindful of his mistakes in Mohali and Delhi. His teatime 62 comprised eight fours, seven of which were muscularly hit on the leg side. He still outpaced Laxman on resumption, adding another 47 in the final session. A fierce sweep from outside the off stump and over wide mid-on took Tendulkar into the eighties and he should have stayed there. Tendulkar waltzed down to Krejza, didn't get to the pitch of the ball, and Mitchell Johnson dropped a comfortable chance running back from mid-off. The next delivery, Laxman coolly went past fifty with a drive wide of sweeper-cover, but a loose shot against Krejza, making room to cut, was snapped up on the second attempt by Brad Haddin.

Proximity to his century seemed to have fired up Tendulkar, who dashed out, very untypically, against Krejza on 98 and looked on as Lee spilled a running catch at mid-off. Having spent 11 deliveries on 99, Tendulkar raised his bat in the warm Nagpur air after raising his hundred - and tenth against Australia - with a spanking cut. He hardly played a shot thereafter and fell lbw to Johnson for 109 with 15 minutes to go.

A 98-run partnership between India's new opening pair occupied much of the morning session before Australia fought back, led by Krejza's double-strike. Sehwag took care of the new-ball threat from Johnson, driving and scooping him through backward of point, slashing him over third man, and whipping him delectably across the line. A genuine outside edge off Johnson, which bounced low in front of Matthew Hayden at first slip, when Vijay was on 11, was the nearest Australia came to a chance early on.

Sehwag's panache was complemented by Vijay's solidity on perhaps the easiest track to make your debut as a batsman. Allowed to drive on the up mid-way through the first session, he also tucked the straighter deliveries for singles that kept the score ticking. Vijay was shaping well, and India had the ideal platform, when Shane Watson struck. Sehwag looked set for a hundred, hitting nine fours and a six in his 66, but couldn't capitalise on his good start, and dragged a turning delivery from Krejza back onto his stumps shortly after Dravid fell.

One down in the series, with a highly creditable draw in Delhi following a drubbing in Mohali, Australia were aiming to salvage their bruised pride. Evenly split in pace and spin, but mellowed by another under-performing display from Lee, Australia relied on Krejza to handle the bulk of the bowling. He came in under a degree of pressure and showed enough stomach for a fight after he was mauled in his first three overs. The Tendulkar drops would have hurt, but Laxman's wicket was reward for an encouraging debut.

Lee, steady of line, lacked in speed. Watson lacked variety, and though he mixed up his pace he remained innocuous after removing Vijay. Cameron White, employed only reluctantly, turned his legbreak painfully slowly and never threatened. Johnson obtained disconcerting lift but his tendency to pitch too full made it easy for the batsmen. Over the next four days, Australia will need to be far more productive in their attempt to avoid their first series loss since 2005.

Laxman ends Third test in a Tame Draw.,.......

VVS Laxman added a half-century to his first-innings double-hundred © AFP

Anil Kumble's 18-year Test career ended without the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in his hands but India still have a strong chance to claim the prize in Nagpur after batting out a draw at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Kumble did get a chance to bowl one final time following his surprise declaration half an hour after tea and there was a tear in his eye as he embarked on his final over.

He took the new ball, although he couldn't add to his 619 Test wickets and his last ball in 132 Tests was a full toss that was driven straight down the ground for four by Matthew Hayden. A better way to remember Kumble might be his final Test wicket; he had closed Australia's first innings with a running catch off his own bowling that demonstrated his courage as he had 11 stitches in his left hand.

The handshakes and pats on the back Kumble received as he left the field for the final time meant an emotional end to a day that had looked as predictable as a Mills and Boon novel after Australia struggled to spark the collapse they needed in the first few hours. They picked up two wickets in the first session and one in the third but India's resolute middle order, led by VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar, had little trouble on a pitch that had less life than John McCain's presidential campaign.

Laxman added an unbeaten 59 to his first-innings double-century, Tendulkar made a useful 47 and Sourav Ganguly threw in a couple of lusty blows towards the end as the game fizzled out of reach of both teams. Not for the first time this series Australia looked incapable of claiming the 20 wickets typically needed to win a Test - they snared only 12 in this game - but on this occasion the benign surface was more responsible than their bowlers.

The day had started with Australia searching for eight wickets, preferably in a hurry, to give themselves a realistic run-chase. India were happy to play for time and, despite losing Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid before lunch, never did they appear in serious danger.

In what was effectively a short encore of his unbeaten 200, Laxman flicked deliveries through leg and crunched Michael Clarke's spin through the off-side for simple but well-executed boundaries. He brought up his half-century with just such a stroke - a four driven through cover when Clarke sent down a full toss.

He combined with Tendulkar for a 52-run partnership that ate up nearly 21 overs and was, by their exquisite standards, remarkably sedate. But that was exactly what India needed and by the time Cameron White picked up Tendulkar for the second time in the series, with an edge to slip from a genuine legbreak, the pair had dead-batted the life out of the match.

Tendulkar did provide some enjoyable moments for the Delhi crowd; a couple of excellent back-foot drives for four off Brett Lee early in his innings brought loud cheers. But he eased into an unhurried and cautious mindset once he lost his initial partner Gambhir, who was unfortunate to be judged lbw for 36 to a Johnson inswinger that would have missed leg stump.

Unlike Tendulkar and later Laxman, Gambhir seemed to forget entirely about scoring and in an hour and a half he added only 15 to his overnight total. He was clearly keen to build a wall of his own after India's usual brick barrier, Dravid, played on to a fast Lee inswinger for 11. The two strikes gave Australia a glimmer of hope but the pitch refused to crumble and so did India's middle order.

Despite the inevitable outcome, both teams will take positives to Nagpur. Australia's top five each passed fifty and the bowlers showed genuine enthusiasm in unhelpful circumstances. India witnessed double-centuries from two class batsmen, although whether Gambhir will play in the final Test is still uncertain as he awaits the result of an appeal against his one-Test ban.

In any case, India ensured that they will regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy unless Australia pinch a series-ending victory. The strange thing is that if they do take possession of the trophy, it won't be Kumble who first gets his hands on it.

Anil Kumble retires from International Cricket

Anil Kumble, India's Test captain, has announced his retirement from international cricket and will not play the last Test of the series against Australia in Nagpur. His announcement came during the fifth day's play in Delhi, the scene of his greatest bowling effort, at the end of which he was carried off the field by teammates in an emotional farewell.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni will now lead India in the Nagpur Test as they hold on to their 1-0 lead from Delhi.

In 132 Tests, Kumble took 619 wickets, the most among Indians and third on the all-time list. He also led the team in 14 Tests, but struggled with the ball in 2008, taking 28 wickets in ten Tests at an average of 50.57.

He was also plagued by injury concerns during the current series - picking up a shoulder injury in the first Test in Bangalore and injuring his finger in the third Test in Delhi - which ultimately sealed his decision to retire. "It's a tough decision when you have played 18 years of cricket and been so competitive. But my body helped make the decision and also, this [finger] injury," he said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

He captained India to three wins, with the 72-run victory at Perth against Australia in January undoubtedly one of the high points during his reign.

The legspinner was also the second player in history, after Jim Laker, to bag 10 wickets in an innings when he ran through Pakistan in the second innings at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. A fitting farewell that his last match was also at the same venue.

In December 2001, in Bangalore, he became India's first spinner to take 300 Test wickets, and a year later, he became the first to do so in one-dayers. In August 2007, at The Oval he went past Glenn McGrath's 563 wickets and in January 2008 crossed the 600 mark, to stand behind only Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan, emphasising his contribution to spin's golden era. And at The Oval he scored his only Test century after 17 years and 118 matches.

Laxman's creates magic again....

Fielders don't matter to VVS Laxman. Their placement and angles become superfluous

When VVS Laxman plays like he did today, there isn't a worry in the world. For 470 minutes over the last two days even the Feroz Shah Kotla's garish stand at the Tata End didn't look ugly. For 470 minutes, Laxman disguised violence with grace and left Australia hopelessly spellbound.

When Laxman plays like he did today, fielders don't matter. Their placement and angles become superfluous. If there are men blocking his whip through midwicket, he can always hit the ball straight past mid-on - and sometimes mid-off - and time it just as well. Early this morning, Laxman had Michael Clarke, at short extra cover, staring him in the face. One typically crunchy push-drive went straight to him, and Australia's plan seemed to be working. The next ball was of similar length but Laxman waited for that extra half a second and played the same shot. This time Clarke had no chance. The other fielders would have experienced the same helplessness at various times throughout the day.

When Laxman plays like he did today, he is one of the most difficult batsmen to bowl to. Mitchell Johnson can bowl as full and wide as he likes, but Laxman will just flick his wrists and hit the ball from outside off to send it speeding to the long-on boundary. Clarke can come over the wicket and pitch it in the rough as much as he likes, but Laxman will either whip him against the spin or clear his leg and play inside out. Brett Lee can bowl as many bouncers and outswingers as he likes, but Laxman will roll his wrists to keep the pulls down or drive them wristily through the covers. Stuart Clark, the only bowler who managed to keep him quiet, admitted that Laxman, when on song, was the hardest batsman to bowl to. "He's very wristy, hits to midwicket from outside off stump, although we did plan for that," Clark said. "He played really well, got on top, and once the momentum went it was hard to get it back."

When Laxman plays like he did today, you leave the ground with memorable shots replaying in your head. He was on 13 yesterday when he played the first one: his front foot came out, his bat met the ball right under his head, and no flourishing follow-through was required. It was a decent delivery from Shane Watson and didn't deserve the treatment it got.

When Laxman plays like he did today, he makes audacious shots look classical. Johnson bowled one wide outside off stump and Laxman's response - a flick to long-on boundary - would evoke awe, and not outrage, from the purists. The next ball was similar, but a touch shorter, and Laxman late-cut it for four. Two overs later, he picked one up from off-stump and whipped it to the square-leg boundary.

When Laxman plays like he did today, he paces his innings superbly. He scored 17 off 19 balls out of the first 50 runs in his 278-run partnership with Gautam Gambhir. Then came the lean period against Clark during which Laxman took 34 balls to move from 50 to 55. And then he took off, reaching his century off 170 balls and scoring his second 100 off only 130, though he hardly ever looked like he was in a hurry. "I'm very satisfied because, after a long time, I got a score more than 150," Laxman said. "I was getting hundreds but was unable to get big hundreds. Hopefully this will start a process and I'll get big hundreds."

When Laxman plays like he did today, his opponents are usually Australia. This was his sixth century, his second double, and his fifth score of more than 140 against his favourite team. When he plays his 100th Test, in Nagpur, he would have played 24 matches but scored 33% of his runs against them. Often he has been asked what it is about Australia that brings out the best in him. And often he has said they are an aggressive side which allows him to play his natural game. It shows too, for nearly 36% of his career boundaries have come against Australia.

When Laxman plays like he did, he often sets up matches for India, like he did today. The declaration came soon after Laxman's double-century and then the hard work started in the field for India. Until then there wasn't a worry in the world.

Zaheer bowls India to record victory....

Zaheer Khan's three early wickets on the fifth day hastened Australia's defeat

It was a match that was never out of India's control. After the tremendous work done over four days, they needed less than a session on the fifth morning to defeat Australia, sealing the Test by 320 runs, their biggest margin of victory in terms of runs ever. Zaheer Khan nipped out three wickets in the space of four deliveries when play started, and though Michael Clarke resisted with 69, it was always going to be a matter of when India would take a 1-0 series lead. In terms of runs, it was Australia's biggest defeat since their 343-run loss to West Indies in Barbados in 1991.

India had reduced Australia to 58 for 5 yesterday, but had to wait 84 runs for their next strike, after which proceedings resembled a bowling alley as Zaheer knocked over the lower order like nine pins. Zaheer was simply unplayable. He struck in the first over of the day, bowling Brad Haddin for 37 with a ripper. It pitched on a length, shaped back in, and took out the middle and off stumps. In his next over, Zaheer struck with his second and third deliveries and found himself on a hat-trick. A leaden-footed Cameron White went for a drive and edged to Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Next ball, Brett Lee had no clue to one pitched fractionally shorter and had his stumps splayed. Three wickets had fallen for three runs.

With nine men around the bat, Mitchell Johnson averted the hat-trick. Zaheer had slowly built up his momentum through the fourth day and struck gold on the fifth morning. He got the ball to move slightly away from the batsmen, and was very accurate. Ishant Sharma achieved movement both ways, evident when Clarke outside-edged towards slip - the ball didn't carry - and later inside-edged towards square leg.

Perhaps significant with two Tests to play, Clarke shrugged off an indifferent tour with a fluent 69. On a pitch with good movement and against bowlers who were on song, he batted with focus and determination. He and Johnson, who batted well for his 26 before popping a return catch to Amit Mishra, added 50. Clarke had been the glue that held a poor Australian innings together, but he was last out when he clipped Mishra - who finished with seven on debut - to midwicket. As the fat lady sang and Punjabi bhangra filled the Mohali air, Dhoni - India's stand-in captain who rarely made a wrong call through the Test - led the charge towards the catcher, Virender Sehwag.

Teams that have a habit of winning know how to seize the momentum and never let it go. Like Australia had done for the last decade and more, India did that very well in Mohali. They were, unquestionably, the superior side in this Test.

Tendulkar breaks Lara's record

Sachin Tendulkar went past Brian Lara's tally of 11,953 Test runs

At 2.31pm, on a hot Mohali Friday, Sachin Tendulkar steered Peter Siddle towards the third-man boundary for three runs to break Brian Lara's record for most Test runs. The record stood for nearly two years after Lara played his final Test and it was inevitable that Tendulkar would eventually break it. As the day progressed Tendulkar scored his 50th half-century and became the first player to cross the 12,000-run mark.

The disappointingly small crowd, built largely of school kids, immediately got on its feet to salute the feat, and fireworks, which continued for three minutes, went off at the PCA Stadium. Tendulkar raised his bat in the air, took his helmet off, and looked up at the sky, as is his routine when he gets to a hundred. The Australian fielders rushed immediately towards him to congratulate him. Ricky Ponting, the man most likely to challenge his status of being the top run-getter, was the first man to shake his hand.

This also brought an end to the soap-opera-type frenzied anticipation for the record. Tendulkar was expected to overtake Lara in Sri Lanka recently, but he endured a poor series with the bat, scoring just 95 runs in three Tests. Then in the series-opener in Bangalore, during a fine match-saving effort in the second innings, it seemed he would get to the record, but he gifted his wicket when 15 short.

Even today the anxiety around was palpable. During the time he got to 15, India lost two wickets in moving from 146 to 179 in 10.2 overs. While he scored at a fair rate, he didn't get nearly as much strike during the period as he would have wanted. While he played 23 balls, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly faced 19 each. It was fitting, in a way, that he achieved the record against Australia, a team he has tormented several times in the past.

Coincidentally, Lara too achieved the world record against Australia, when he went past Allan Border's tally of 11,174 runs during the Adelaide Test in 2005. They remain the only three players to cross the 11,000-run mark in Tests. Though it is uncertain how long Tendulkar will prolong his Test career - which has lasted 19 years - the two players who stand the best chance of beating his eventual tally are Rahul Dravid (10,302) and Ponting (10,239).

India draws first test with Aussies

VVS Laxman concentrated hard and helped India secure the draw

Five days on a cracking pitch could not separate Australia and India, who will head to Mohali for Friday's second Test at 0-0 after playing out a draw in Bangalore. VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar helped grind out the result - or lack of - which was a pleasing outcome for India after Australia dominated the first couple of days.

Hoping for another Sydney, Ricky Ponting set India 299 from 83 overs but his attack lacked the firepower to blast through India's resolute middle order. For the full five days the surface had featured crevices so wide that, had the wiry Ishant Sharma gone missing, you would know where to look. Strangely, it continued to play relatively well throughout. Occasional deliveries spat and bounced while others stayed low but batsmen who applied themselves could survive.

However, scoring remained difficult and once Virender Sehwag departed cheaply, India's target was largely irrelevant. As Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Laxman held off Australia's bowlers it began to look like the only celebration would be a personal one as Tendulkar closed in on Brian Lara's all-time Test run-scoring record. Even that party was put on hold when Tendulkar fell 14 short of Lara's mark.

At least he made a major contribution to saving a game Australia will feel they should have won. The parallels with Sydney for much of the final day were obvious: again India were set a target that was all but out of reach and again they went to tea with seven wickets in hand.

But the Chinnaswamy Stadium is not the SCG. In Sydney more was happening, both off the field and on it. In that game an average of 321 runs were scored each day; in this Test the figure was 239. And in Sydney the game finished with the sun still shining; in Bangalore bad light interrupted proceedings when Australia required miracles.

Viewed in its entirety, the hard-fought match was like Test cricket of old. Five full days of relatively low-scoring play without a result provided the starkest possible contrast to the IPL, which was the last major cricket played in Bangalore. Consecutive sixes were commonplace in the IPL; there weren't two in this entire Test.

It didn't stop the deafening roars from the crowd as Tendulkar and Laxman fought off Australia's attack. Tendulkar put together two incredibly valuable partnerships that all but secured the draw after India lost two early wickets that gave Australia a sniff. He combined with Gambhir for a 53-run stand and then added 61 with Laxman. The responsibility was then passed on to Laxman and Sourav Ganguly, who prodded away the spin and built a 39-run partnership that took India through to the close.

Cameron White's first Test wicket, that of Sachin Tendulkar, was one to remember

Laxman's concentration was complete. He watched the ball closely, defended with ease and did not get bogged down at one end. The same could be said of Tendulkar, until a momentary slip-up that gave Cameron White an experience he will never forget - he picked up Tendulkar as his first Test wicket. White threw up a delivery outside off and drew Tendulkar into an airy drive that was snaffled at cover. A teary White, Test legspinner, celebrated just over a week after playing as a batting allrounder in club cricket in Melbourne.

The lack of a truly dangerous frontline slow bowler did restrict Australia. Michael Clarke and White sent down 38 overs between them and, although they gave the batsmen moments of trouble, rarely did they look like running through the order. Nor could the fast bowlers provide the necessary spark, although they threatened to light a fuse early in India's innings. It seemed like India's batting order would break apart quicker than the deceptive pitch when they lost Sehwag and Rahul Dravid within the first nine overs.

Sehwag, the one man who might have made Ponting nervous about the target, was taken at first slip off Stuart Clark having been dropped by Brad Haddin off the previous Brett Lee over. India's 16 for 1 became 24 for 2 when Dravid flicked Lee to short midwicket, where Ponting dived acrobatically to take the catch.

It gave Australia's captain reason to believe that batting into the final day - the lower order added 35 to the overnight total - was not a bad decision. His attack simply didn't have the time or weaponry to finish the task. It meant no real answers to the two primary questions that hung over Australia in the lead-up: could a pair of half-spinners add up to a whole, and could the fast bowlers prove matchwinners in India.

The hosts entered the Test with a query or two as well. India's Fab Four were under pressure and while Laxman, Tendulkar and Ganguly were major reasons the game was saved, rarely in either innings did they look like dominating Australia's bowlers. Anil Kumble was also being pressed on his retirement plans; his rickety right shoulder and failure to take a wicket have done nothing to suppress those questions.

After five days, 30 wickets and 1195 runs, neither side can claim to be especially better off than the other. It's time for Mohali.

Kotha Bangaru Lokam Review

My Rating:3.25/5

Cast:Varun Sandesh,Swetha Prasad,Prakash Raj,Jayasudha,Ahuthi Prasad

Music:Micky J Meyer

Story-Screenplay-Dailouges-Direction:Srikanth Addala

Producer:Dil Raju

My View:I expected this movie a another good movie of Dil Raju and it is.Might look alike as Happy Days but yet it is not that good but an O.K. fare but it will be a hit as Dil Raju's previous films.

Story:Balu(Varun) and Swapna (Swetha) both study their intermediate in a college near Rajahmundry and both fall in love.Swapna's Father(Ahuthi Prasad) comes to know about their love and brigs back to their home.Accidentally Balu's Father(Prakash raj) dies. How Balu takes care of his mother(Jayasudha) and gets succeded in his love and career is the remaining part of the movie.

Performances:

Varun Sandesh:He did his role very well and his first solo chance as a hero and he proved himself well. His dailouge delivery is also good.

Swetha prasad:She did her part good and didn't appear as a debutant.

Others:Asusually Prakashraj did very well as hero's father.Jayasudha did her part in ease. Ahuthi Prasad is good in his part.Brahmanandam did a good job as principal of the college.

Technical Departments:

Story-Screenpay-Direction:Srikanth Addala did a fine job as directo, dailouge writer, screenplay writer and also had a convincing story.Narration of the film is also good.

Music:Music by Micky is godd after Happy Days.

Others:Editing by Venkatesh,Art by Prakash is good.Production values of Dil raju are exceptionally great.

Final Word:First half of the film is gfood and second half is decent.like in his previous films Bommarillu and Parugu Dil RaJu again dealt about relation between parents and kids. The negative part of the film is that they are just intermediate students and love in that period is not that good. The main asset of the film is Godavari basin.Almost the whole movie is done in and around Rajahmundry which is very pleasant to see and a ver nice idea by Dil Raju. Finally it is yet another hit for Dil Raju.

Chintakayala Ravi Review.......

My Rating:3/5

Cast:Venkatesh,Anushka,Mamata Mohandas,Laxmi,Chandra Mohan,Sayaji Shinde

Story-Screenplay-Dailouges:Kona Venkat

Music:Vishal-Sekhar

Producer:Nallamalapu Bujji

Director:Yogesh

My View:I expected a lot before entering into the hall as the movie might be another Nuvvu Naku Nachav or Malliswari but it didn't reach the expectations and is an average fare.

Story:Chintakayala Ravi(Venkatesh) who works ina bar in USA pretends his Mother(Laxmi) as a software engineer. She fixes a match for him with Manidikayala Lavanya(Mamata Mohandas) and lavanya accepts thinking he is a software engineer and asks her friend Sunita(Anushka) who works in USA to know about Ravi. The rest of the story is what happens between Ravi,Sunita and Lavanya

Performances:

Venkatesh:He did his role very convincingly and with ease and he is the only one who can do such roles in industry as he already done.He is the big saving grace of the film.

Anushka:She is good in the role of Sunita as a friend of Lavanya.

Mamata Mohandas:She is adequate in her role.

Others:Laxmi did her role convincingly and is back after Murari.Venu did a special role as a friend of Ravi.Sunil is good in his role.Ali's role is continuation of Nachmi he did in Chiruta. NTR made an appearence in SHAVA SHAVA  song and made few steps with Venky.

Techical dpartments:

Story-ScreenPlay-Dailouge-Direction:Story of the film by Kona Venkat is Simple.Direction by Yogesh is just OK.There are many ispired scenes like Copy scene in Mr.Bean,Kitikilu 2008(telugu version of Windows 2008 which is know tomany).Dialouges by Kona Venkat are good.

Music:Vishal and Sekhar composed good music for the film.Bagunde and Enduko songs are good on the screen.Backgroud score by Manisharma is good.

Analysis:Chintakayala Ravi has as good first half and slows a bit in second half.Even the comedy is not that great in the film which is expected.Bog plus point is Venky.I assure that this definetly going to be a Hit as Venky has a huge power of pullig family crowds and made many of his prevous films which got avg talk and became hit.

Music:Manisharma
Cinematography:Vatri
Editing:Marthand K Venkatesh
Producer:Anand Prasad
Story-Screenplay-Direction:Siva

Review:
Story:Vijay(Gopichand) who goes to kolkata to pursue his studies does some romance with Swetha(Anushka) and save another girl Divya(Poonam Kaur). The rest of the story is what is his purpose of coming to Kolakata and how he solves..................

Performances:
Gopichand:He gave his best effort and did a nice job in alla elements like comedy, emotions etc......This can be said as one of the film which he give his best in alla elements......
Anushka:She is good in the movie. She has a lot to do in first half but nothing in second. But over all she did a nice job.
Poonam Kaur:She is adequate and did a nice job as sister of Gopichand.
Others:Manoj K Jayan did a nice job as villain.Krishna Baghavan and Raghu Babu brought many laughs in the mouths of the people.Their comedy track is the best in the movie.Ali did as Sports H.O.D and as a six packer very well.

Technical Departments:
Direction:Siva a debut director did a nice job in direction but could have been much better in screeplay and narration.
Music:Music by Manisharma is good.He gave a good background score to the movie.
Others:Cinematography is good.Dialoges are good and stunts are very well done by Ram-Laxman.Editing is fine and Production values are good.

Final Word:First half of the film is good and the main story is revealed in second half.Interval twist is good. The main plus point of the film isGopichand and comedy and on the flip side screenplay in second half could have been much better.Violence in the film is excessive.Comedy track of Krishna Baghavan and Raghu babu is the best in film which is almost half of the second half of movie. Finally, the movie is targetted on B&C centres and can be seen for Gopichand and comedy.

Homam Review

I am not able to judge this film whether it is good or bad but definetly it is not the best and worst. It can be termed as an avg grosser. This movie is said to be as a remake(better to say freemake) of Hollywood blockbuster THE DEPARTED
PLOT:
Chandu(J.D) is a police inspector who actually works for 'Daddy'(Mahesh Manjrekar), the head of the city's crime beat. Mallik(Jagapathi babu) is an undercover cop in Daddy's empire. Daddy's bane is the commissioner and Mallik's mentor, Vishwanath(Pradeep Ravath). When he busts Daddy's criminal deal the umpteenth time, Daddy in his rage tells him he has a stooge in the police team there. Vishwanath, not to be outdone, informs him he has an undercover cop in his team. Both Chandu and Mallik are in danger.
Performances:Jagapathi babu did a good job as an undercover cop J.D.Chakravarthy did well in negative role and alsoi suited well.Mamata Mohandas is good.
Technicians:Ever one is saying it is a freemake of The Departed as i didn't see it no nothing about that but it is an interesting plot but screenplay is not that good wich is to be good in such a kind movies. As J.D. is doing for the first time as a director he did well and need to be improve well.Music is the biggest draw back of teh film and also unnecessary.
Final Word:It is Just an OK film which can be seen once.J.D. can do well if he conc well on subject.
Tail Piece:The sequel of this film MARANA HOMAM is also coming soon into thestres in which hero Jagapathi Babu once again becomes undercover cop and goes to PAK to catch DAWOOD IBRAHIM......................
My Rating: 2.5/5
